Sporting Safe in the Liminal Sphere: "Tactics" and Facebook

Facebook is public to everyone who wants to get the app. It's easy to access and can be used for sharing posts of your life, making comments and even sharing one's opinions/ideas. Those who usually have Facebook are at least 40 years and older. It has been used to find any information on what is going on in the world or even their community. Facebook can give the option to make your account public or private which is something good to have access to because maybe one prefers to only have their posts shown to close friends and the others would rather allow people to see their life through these posts. When you delete a photo you've shared on Facebook even when you delete it, it's still in the system. It's just that now Facebook has it. The con of having Facebook and any social media platform when you think you've deleted something or even deactivated your account the Platform still has access to it and it's still trackable. Sometimes the use of Facebook can be for having debates and using it to share one's political views that would lead to having an argument (debate) because everyone can either have the same point of view as you or the complete opposite. In the past not everyone was allowed to speak their mind and it mainly goes to those who are indigenous and women, but now with having social media anyone can say what they want. The only issue of being able to speak your mind online is that it can be inappropriate and disrespectful. I say this because there's many people out there who think they are allowed to use such words that are not appropriate or even post videos/pictures that are disgusting and should immediately be taken down. Overall, when having not only Facebook, but other social media apps there’s a right and wrong from what you should post and say. A key thing to remember is if this is something I want anyone to see/read.

Libraries as Spaces Between Us: Recognizing and Valuing the Third Space

There is a question asked in this which is “What is the first thing that you think of when you think of a library?” and my answer is a place where you can find resources for essays, research purposes, and where there are different genres of books to read. The purpose of having libraries is to encourage people to gain knowledge by having access to their local library and even building up schools. Having an education is an important part of our life because how else will we learn and grow as people walking in this world? Libraries are not being used to find sources anmore because they are basically competing with the new technology. An example would be purchasing books through amazon, using google to now find information faster rather than having someone look through books and even having apps to read from your phone. Libraries are trying to find ways to stay relevant and now it's starting to get more impossible as new technologie or apps start being created. Libraries are now wanting their building to feel a place where people are comfortable and welcomed, by having new decorations and even having the aroma smell of coffee. Personally I loved the idea because when I am looking for a book and wanting to read there I think having the library feel almost like a home will make me want to stay longer and come back again. The best location to have a library is when it's local in your community and having a cafe nearby. Rather than competing with other companies, libraries just want to create a space of familiarity, so they are comfortable and not anxious. Something I noted is that Libraries are in constant worry about the aesthetic of the building. Having a proper space will make customers want to come back and maybe bring other people, so the libraries can stay relevant longer.

Social Media, Public Space, and Emerging Logics of Aggregation

On October 15, 2011 on Twitter there was a movement called #Occupy Everywhere movement and there were many people there according to pictures and articles shown on Twitter. There is a use of Pathos in the second paragraph because it shows an emotion towards the protestors specifically towards two women. There were police officers pepper spraying these two women and all they were doing was chanting and another example of pathos is the response police officers made and there was video proof of them wrestling those protesting. This article reminds me of how it was during the Black Lives Matter Movement. During the BLack Lives Matter movement police officers were beating these innocent people just for protesting, but when these Trump Supporters who were mainly white attacked the Capitol and did not once get beaten the way those who were a part of the BLM did. This article talks about how social media influences these different protests. The reason why is because many people speak out about what and how they feel about certain situations and because of this there are people who can agree and now start talking about protesting in order to change this situation to make everything fair. In the past before technology existed movements that we hear about now are not being organized through the internet such as Twitter, Facebook, and etc. it would have to be face to face. It was easier to be a part of a movement by sharing to others and even creating hashtags which now people use to get someone's attention because when hashtags become popular anything related to the movement will pop on your screen. People will do anything to be heard and one of the biggest ideas is to start a movement which will now get everyone's attention either from listening on the radio, watching the news, reading about it and even viewing it on their devices.

Global Financial Crisis

The causes of financial crises are as complex as many of the crises themselves and the human beings responsible for them. I agree with this because it’s our actions that cause how we all live as a society. Money is what people use every single day and sometimes there can be many consequences being that they don’t have enough money, or they have too much money, but they are spending it on things that aren’t for everyday use or maybe it could be. The Asia Financial Crisis in 1997 was a precursor to the financial crisis of 2008-2009. The Asia financial crisis started in Indonesia and caused stock markets to crash’s bc reversed economic growth. The struggle against terrorism was the restoration of domestic and global confidence in Americas economic system in general and its financial system in particular. Examples of impacts of the global financial crisis would be housing prices crashing, foreclosures becoming common-places, unemployment, college students trying to find jobs, etc.. Many developing countries took a prudent approach to finance and save money were not as badly damaged. The U.S government encouraged Americans to purchase homes and refinance or borrow against the values of homes they owned. The global financial crisis affected virtually all areas, including the process of globalization. Another major global financial crisis is a global power shift.

Environmental Issues

When it comes to environmental issues it's talking about nature, air pollution, etc.. About 3,700 years ago, Sumerian cities in the southern part of Mesopotamia prospered and it was because of the high levels of agricultural productivity that supported permanent human resettlements. Before the start of World War 2, there were concerns about endangered wildlife and growing threats of ocean oil pollution which led to bilateral and limited international environmental agreements. It's sad to see people not caring about the world we live in and how constantly animals are being endangered and animals losing their homes. With not everyone being involved with recycling, not littering, etc. the world is becoming worse and worse. The reason air pollution is so bad is because oil companies are letting all of the gasses out in the air where people can get sick and end up in hospitals because of how bad they are taking it in. Governments often respond to pressure from environmental activists and industries that must comply with environmental laws in their home countries often support international agreements to prevent companies in other countries from gaining a competitive advantage. There is a connection between women and environmental issues that is acknowledged by UNEP, which has held conferences on women and the environment and established a committee of senior women advisers on sustainable development. The Green Belt Movement is a Kenyan movement focusing on preventing further deforestation. Whales were very popular because of Moby-Dick a book by Herman Meiville and during that time Americans sailed the Pacific for up to four years at a time searching for whales. When they returned to America with great wealth, since whales provided oil for lubricating industrial machinery and for making soap and margarine, baleen for manufacturing corsets and umbrellas and food.

Making an Effective Argument

The first thing talked about is when an anonymous person would not show his or her face, but will write words on their hand with a pen or marker to spread a message. An example I see in this article is “Donate to charity”. A man named “MadV” (youtube channel name) would make youtube videos and write a message on his palm and it's a 4-minute long video of many of the responses he gets from viewers. Those who view his video either will respond back or just choose to ignore it. These videos create such strong messages written down such as “open mind”, “love is strong”, “no more racism”, etc.. These were one of the most important slogans at the time and keep in mind this happened in November of 2006. These arguments appeal to our emotions and expand our knowledge, lead us through a complex set of claims by providing networks of logical relationships, and they build on what had been written by providing trails of sources. Writing in college I feel could be a bit more difficult because of what our professors should already expect from us, but a good thing is that they are still willingly to help and go over how to write a good essay in the end. Much of the writing in college will consist mainly of arguments which is true because being in college myself it's all we do. Some expectations of arguments such as including a thesis statement should be offly similar, but others such as the emphasis on finding alternative ways of thinking about a subject and finding facts that might be a bit difficult to your conclusion may be unfamiliar. When one begins with an argument starting off with “in my opinion”, you are making a similar announcement and a reader assumes that if you're making a claim in writing then essentially you believe in that claim.

Global Terrorism

Global Terrorism affects our daily lives even when traveling by plane from one city to another within the United States has now become more complicated and stressful due to the increased airport security. While states are generally impeded by national boundaries, their non state adversaries routinely disregard national borders. The French seal for the Terror, the period of widespread violence, public executions and intimidation of civilians, was strongly rejected by Edmund Burke, the British conservative philosopher who regarded French terrorists as hellhounds. As American troops, tanks, and planes fought insurgents in the besieged city of Falluja in Iraq in early April 2004, opponents of the U.S. occupation kidnapped several foreign civilians and threatened to execute them. Terrorist organizations adopt several strategies to achieve their objectives. Creating a climate of fear and insecurity, partly to undermine people’s confidence in their government, is an integral component of terrorists’ strategies. Some terrorist froups reject the terrosit label in ordr to gaun greater legitimacy or acceptance in society. Governments on the other hand, refuse to confer any kind of legitimacy on terrorist groups and reject defining terrorim as warfare. Weapons used by terrorists vary according to their goals, available technology, and resources at their disposal. Hawalas is an informal system of transferring money based primarily on trust and interpersonal relations. Contributions from individuals and groups are a major source for money terrorism. Many individuals make charitable contributions to organizations that are principally concerned with assisting the poor. Diamonds, oil and other natural resources provide revenues for terrorism and terrorists often prefer diamonds becasue they are easily transported, easily hidden and easily converted into cash. Criminal activities are a major source of funding for terrorisnm. Terrorists are often involved on armed robbbery, credit card fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, extortion, and other crimes. Daily individuals, families, governments, companies and nonstate actors worldwide bear the costs of terrorism to varying degrees. Their of five kinds of terrorism which are Domestic terrorism, nationalist terrorism, religious terrorism, state terroris and global terrorism.

Creating Reader-Centered Websites

There are many ways to plan the content and organization of any communication. For websites, developing a site map is particularly effective. Readers can reach their destinations in three clocks only if they don't make mistakes. To develop a truly effective site map, you will need to remain willing to refine it perhaps radically, throughout the site’s development. Remain alert and responsive to new insights that you gain about your readers' needs, desires, and intuitive ways of looking for information. Gathering the information needed to create your website’s text and graphics will always require research, even if only searching your memory. For a digital portfolio, your primary content would be samples of your work. By including links to the websites of companies for which you’ve worked, organizations in which you’ve participated, and your academic program, you can fill out an employer’s appreciation of your qualifications and accomplishments. When creating a website you can encounter two sorts of ethical issues: those involved with what you borrow from other people when making your site and those concerning what you offer visitors to your site. Whenever you are unsure about whether permission is needed to use something, check with your instructor or other knowledgeable person or simply request the permission. Even when permission isn’t needed, acknowledge your source when you use something that clearly represents someone else’s intellectual or creative effort. A digital portfolio as in your resume and job application letter represent your work ethically by following the advice given in Chapter 2’s discussion of ethical issues in the job search. Almost all web pages are constructed as tables that form grids quite literally. The most frequently used letter in the source code for most web pages is for table.

Manifestation of Culture in Websites

In this article they report on their research into the identification of elements that can be attributed to culture on website design. Over the last decade the number of internet users has been growing exponentially and web has become an important and indispensable communication channel throughout the world. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions is one of the models, if not the model, most extensively quoted by many researchers in cultural studies Hofstede’s model includes four dimensions: Power distance, Individualism vs. Collectivism, Masculinity vs. Femininity, and Uncertainty avoidance. A specific “cultural marker” signifies a cultural association and denotes a conventionalised use of the feature in the website. Layout and menu design were considered as central factors of information retrieval system by Yuh and Roh. More researchers have started looking into how users from different cultures differ in their perception, attitudes, and behavior towards websites and several papers have reported differences in online behaviour across cultures. If the websites cover a similar topic or purpose, then one can expect that the websites would have more homogeneity in their content, but not necessarily in the organisation and presentation of that content that may be more culturally affected. Further details of each category and the features that were examined are as follows: information about the organisation, visual design, age layout, user input and multimedia. Both sets of sites have nearly the same occurrence of information concerning organisaiton information, related law/regulations, annual report, press release and publications, information of its staff members and online fundraising availability. SK’s broadband penetration rate (26.4%) was higher than the UK (19.4%), according to the OECD Broadband Statistics. The more culturally significant differences observed might be the more frequent occurrences of online communities and message boards on the SK sites as these phenomena can be considered to reflect the “collectivist” type of a society where social values and group decision-making are nurtured.

Testing Drafts for Usability and Persuasiveness

Companies such as Microsoft and IBM use testing extensively for the online and print instructions that accompany their products. Testing is such an important activity in some organizations that they employ testing specialists and build special test facilities. Even without such facilities, however, you can increase the effectiveness of your communications by using the same basic strategies that testing experts employ. To construct a test that accurately predicts how your target audience will respond to your finished communication, you must pick test readers who truly represent your target readers. If you are writing instructions for plumbers or computer programmers, choose plumbers or computer programmers for your test readers. If it is impossible to locate test readers from your target audience, find people as similar as possible to that audience. On the other hand, if your test readers know less than your target readers about your subject, their puzzlement could lead you to include background information and explanations your target readers neither need nor want. To see how you might apply these guidelines, consider the way Imogene tested instructions that would enable ordinary consumers to install a car radio and CD player manufactured by her employer. Imogene supplied Janice with a power drill and Phillips head screwdriver, but nothing else because these might be the only tools an rdinary consumer would have. At work, user tests usually focus on the readers’ attitudes toward one or both of the following: the subject matter of the communication and the quality of the communication. Testing communications that will be used in other cultures can represent special challenges. For reasons explained throughout this book, the language, images, and other aspects of a communication that seem perfectly clear and appropriate in one’s own culture can be incomprehensible, laughable, or offensive in another.
